Self- Regulation is a learned skill much like learning math, sports, or instruments. It incorporates knowing one's own body, listening to the body's needs, and developing strategies to help the body cope with different stressors within the day. No wonder so many children struggle with self-regulation!
Our OTs have dedicated much time and training towards helping people develop the skills necessary for self-regulation. Some areas we address are...
-Interoception (recognizing internal signals like hungry, tired, upset) -Identifying feelings and emotions -Coping with those emotions in different environments -Effectively getting body's needs met -Identifying different stressors -Regulating and integrating sensory input -Assessing environments that are helpful or harmful to success -Developing tools and strategies that are uniquely effective
