Transition to Adulthood
No matter your child’s age, the transition to adulthood can be overwhelming to think about. Your child is preparing to transition from an adolescent, teenager and into adulthood. No future is certain but at Conquer Therapy we have developed a program that works to assess, develop and collaborate in order to make the transition to adulthood as smooth as possible. We believe it is beneficial to start this process as early as middle school so that you have a clear path and adequate time to develop interests and skills necessary for a fulfilled life.
Conquer Therapy’s Support in Transition Planning
Feeding therapy is a specialized area of intervention focusing on challenges related to the motor skills involved in eating and the development of healthy eating habits. From infants experiencing difficulties with bottle-feeding to young adults struggling with transitioning to solid foods or individuals on tube feedings, our feeding therapy program is tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual across all developmental stages.
This evaluation includes activities of daily living (ADLs), fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, and other crucial aspects that contribute to transition. The results inform the creation of a personalized transition plan that addresses specific areas of development.
Independent living skills is a key aspect of transitioning to adulthood. We focus on developing independent living skills such as self-care routines, meal preparation, budgeting, and organization. By honing these skills, individuals gain confidence and autonomy in managing their daily lives.
Transitioning to adulthood often involves entering the workforce or pursuing vocational interests. Interventions include work-related tasks, time management, and social skills crucial for successful employment.
Successful adulthood hinges on effective social interactions. We help build on social and interpersonal skills, foster the ability to navigate various social settings, communicate effectively, and establish meaningful connections with peers and colleagues.
Sensory processing challenges can significantly impact daily functioning. Strategies address sensory sensitivities or difficulties, creating a more comfortable and conducive environment for individuals as they transition to adulthood.
In an increasingly digital world, adaptive technology plays a vital role. We help assess the individual’s comfort and proficiency with relevant technologies, providing guidance on using adaptive tools that facilitate independence, communication, and vocational pursuits.
Our OTs actively collaborate with caregivers and other members of the support system. By providing education and resources, we ensure that the transition plan is integrated into the broader family context, fostering a supportive environment that enhances the individual’s journey to adulthood.
The Early Start Advantage
Occupational therapy is most effective when initiated early. By incorporating OT services in middle school, individuals gain a head start in developing essential skills. Early intervention allows for a gradual and comprehensive approach, providing adequate time for skill acquisition and confidence building.
At Conquer Therapy, we are dedicated to nurturing independence and facilitating a seamless transition to adulthood. By addressing functional skills, promoting independence, and collaborating with caregivers, our OTs contribute significantly to the holistic program at Conquer Therapy.
